This is part of a larger picture that shows Lev’s son, Sam, as a young man on New York’s Lower East Side, to compare and contrast Lev and Sam as young men.
Lev has the Odessa Opera House behind him, showing the importance of not only Odessa in his formative years, but also the influence of the theatre, which was where he met his wife, Raisa (Sam’s mother).
Pose and clothes are based on that Leyendecker painting, “The Arrow Collar Man Reading Book.”
